Nikola Đuretić
Nikola Đuretić (Osijek 1949) is an author whose work has been translated into numerous languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian, etc). At the Zagreb University he graduated in English Language and Literature as well as Comparative Literature. To date Đuretić has published more than thirty books of short stories, novels, essays, poems, feuilleton and memoires, of which eight books of haiku.
His work has been included into many anthologies and he received numerous literary awards. For more than two decades he lived in London where he worked as the BBC Senior Producer. For his contribution to Croatian culture he received the state order of merit Red Danice hrvatske s likom Marka Marulića. Upon retiring from the BBC, he returned to Croatia where he lives as a full time writer.
For his novel The Last Surrender (2016) he received several awards: ”Josip and Ivan Kozarac” Award for the book of the year, Visoka žuta žita Award for the overall contribution to Croatian literature, as well as one of the most prestigious national awards Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award for the highest literary achievement in the Republic of Croatia.
He also translated works of the most prominent contemporary English and Irish writers (Salman Rushdie, Penelope Lively, Julian Barnes, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Beryl Bainbridge, Louis de Bernieres, Hugo Williams, Edward Gordon Craig, Desmond Egan and others).
