Senko Karuza
Senko Karuza (Split, 1957) spent his childhood and early school years on the island of Vis, which remained an essential thematic focus of his prose. He studied Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science in Zagreb. From that time, his writing has been published in magazines such as Polet, Mogućnosti, Dnevnik (Ljubljana), Kolaps (Mostar), Slobodna Dalmacija and others.
His first short story collection, Busbuskalai, was published in 1996. This was followed by the books Is There Life Before Death, Island Guide, It’s Hard for Me to Say, Camera Obscura, Chest-to-Chest, Photographs of the End. Along with Miroslav Mićanović and Branko Čegec, he published the book Three Crocodiles.
His Island Guide has been translated into Polish, Czech and Hungarian, while a German and Italian edition are currently being arranged. He is the founder of the Multimedia Mobile Centre for the exploration of alternative ways of survival on small remote islands, which initiated the Mare Mare Literature Festival on the island of Vis in 2007.
